  • Meeting betweeen Presidents Moshe Katzav and Traian Basescu

    On Saturday, 29th of January, the daily newspaper "Jurnalul National" released anarticle referring to the meeting between the Presidents Moshe Katzav and Traian Basescu on the occasion of the 60 years ceremonies from the eliberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Taking into consideration the lack of information on the subject form the history manuals, Basescu stated the necessity of a long educational process for the Romanian people in order to accept the reality of the Holocaust on Romania's teritory. Also, the President of Romania specified that the problem of Holocaust has to be accepted by the Romanian people and suggested the introduction of the historical realities into the scholar manuals. Diplomatic sources are announcing the official visit of Basescu to Israel.

  • Romanian Government declaration on the occasion of commemorating 60 years from the eliberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp

    Romanian Government released a communique on the occasion of commemorating 60 years from the eliberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. In this document it is shown that the Romanian Government brings an omage to all those who were lost in the 2nd world war because of their Jewish religion.

    "The commemoration" - it is showed in the declaration - "represents an moment to remind the terrors and the murders of the people with the Jewish origin, as well as the strenghtening of the engagement made by the countries involved in the democratic community of fighting with all the resources against the xenophobia and antisemitism.. The Romanian government understands the importance of his mission of firmly acting for the combating the discrimination forms based on the ethnic or religious differences.

    The educational area is considered to be of a great importance as well as the the design of a certain programmes destinated for the study of the Holocaust which are to be implemented within the schools serving the purpose of both teaching all the information related to this subject and preparing the teachers background in order to be able to educate the Romanian children about the out co-nationals, the Jews. We consider the investition in education to be an investition in our future.

    This is why we count on the support of the countries which proved to have a great experience in this area in the frames of the acceptance of Romania in the International Force for Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research with full rights, as well as of all the organizations, foundations and academical centres which can help us to start activities centered on the showing the truth about the Jews destiny along the Second World War .

    We will focus on the development of the suggestions of the Historians International Commision for the Study of the Holocaust. All these decisions are representing a part of measures which demonstrate the Romanian Governent efforts to rise the awareness of the actual generations that a horrible phenomenon as Holocaust must never happen again. The commemoration of the Holocaust is not only an event related of the National Day of the Holocaust fixed on the 9 of October ( the beginning of the deportations in Transnistria, in 1942) but a continous process meant to remind us that we have to strive to be better, more tollerant and more honest"
