The Romanian Holocaust Academic Learning Resource

For the majority of Romanians, the Holocaust is still an abstract notion about terrible mass-killngs that happened elsewhere ("not on the territory of Romania"), somewhere in Western Europe, during World War II. At the time of the building of this web page, in 2005, the mere attempt to bring to public discussion the subject of Romania's infamous contribution to the large picture of the Holocaust still creates frustration among uneducated and uninformed people in Romania, in spite of the results presented by the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania, headed by Nobel Prize laureate, Prof. Elie Wiesel.

At a different scale, but not less important, unfortunately there are still quite a few Romanian intellectuals and opinon leaders that embrace minimalizing or even negationist attitudes, due to lack of information, wrong judgement and biased personal interpretations.

Following a series of confusing declarations regarding the subject of the Romanian Holocaust issued in 2003 by the Romanian Government itself and former president Ion Iliescu, an International Commission on the Holocaust was created and it presented the results of its work in September 2004.

In this context, the creation of a "Romanian Holocaust Academic Learning Resource" (RHALR), co-sponsored by B'nai B'rith International and The Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany represents an initiative at the right time, bringing a contribution to the general efforts of Romania of coming to terms with its own history, and advancing the cause of Holocaust remembrance and education.
